Reclaimed Barn Wood: Uses and Benefits

There is a very high demand for reclaimed barn wood and lumber because of the limitless benefits of using these materials, compared to non-seasoned or new green lumber.  Reclaimed wood is often removed from flooring and wood beams in old barns, buildings, storehouses and factories.  Most architects and interior designers value this type of wood and often prefer it for such uses as classic  to contemporary interior décor as well as other architectural uses including side paneling, furniture and cabinets.

The most preferred type of reclaimed wood is Wormy Chestnut.  It is the perfect type of wood for use in paneling and flooring, thanks to its rich color range and impressive grain.  The other most popular and valuable reclaimed wood types are Maple, Oak and Fir which are more easily reclaimable.  Most people used to build barns with Wormy Chestnut largely because it is a very strong wood and could easily be used as  beams – a crucial structural part of any building.  Cypress is also becoming more and more common as a reclaimed wood, especially in the coastal regions.  This is because it is a good building choice  due to its remarkable characteristics and ability to withstand moisture and humidity in such an environment.

Uses of reclaimed wood

Because reclaimed wood is still very strong architects will still purpose it to be used as support beams for ceiling and roof structures.  Interior designers on the other hand view reclaimed wood as perfect decoration elements and choose to have it used in the actual building or used to make decorations and furniture.  The rustic look that reclaimed wood gives a room or house enhances the charisma and elegant natural feel of the house in a classy and stylish manner.

Most barns are built from large mature trees that have developed heartwood.  This is the dense, solid dark wood in the middle of the tree that is resistant to rotting and destructive elements such as termites.  The heartwood is dry, hard and more stable than any other layers of the tree.  Heartwood often smells sweet and has a rich attractive color that cannot be found on any other newly felled tree.  Because of this and other features, reclaimed wood, especially those from such buildings as old barns, are perfect for re-use in a home or office environment for structural purposes, design elements  or making furniture.

Benefits of reclaimed barn wood

The most notable benefit of using salvaged barn wood is that it is the perfect way to protect nature and the environment we live in by not letting wood that could be put to good use go to waste.  Choosing reclaimed wood gives growing trees a chance to live.  Also, reclaimed wood often has outstanding characteristics that are not found in any other wood type, making it perfect for re-use in home décor and making furniture.

Reclaimed wood from old barns is eco-friendly, durable, offers timeless beauty and will save the environment in that it reduces the demand for cutting down and treating new wood.  Wood such as Chestnut is scarce today because of diseases and deforestation and the best way one can have it in the house is by reclaiming and reusing it.
